Evaluate a steel coil handling equipment manufacturer on engineering process, not just price — specifically whether they use FEA structural design, coded welders, NDT weld inspection, and proof load testing before a unit ships.

Checklist for evaluating a manufacturer

  • Do they use FEA (Finite Element Analysis) in design? FEA optimises structural cross-sections to achieve the required SWL at minimum dead weight, which preserves your crane's net lifting capacity. A manufacturer relying only on generic catalogue ratings, without structural analysis for your specific dimensions, is a warning sign.
  • Do they fabricate from certified plate with coded welders? Structural steel plate certified to IS/EN standards, welded by coded welders, is the baseline for lifting equipment. Ask specifically what certification their welders hold.
  • Do they perform NDT (non-destructive testing) on welds? Magnetic particle inspection of all welds catches defects that visual inspection alone would miss — this should be standard, not an optional extra.
  • Do they proof load test every unit before dispatch? Look for proof load testing at a defined percentage above rated SWL (125% is standard practice), with a test certificate issued per unit.
  • Do they provide an SWL marking and as-built drawing with every unit? Documentation should travel with the equipment — a permanent SWL marking, a signed test certificate, and an as-built drawing, not just a delivery note.
  • What's their manufacturing lead time and track record? A manufacturer's history — decades in business, the range of industries served, and whether they've handled dimensions and capacities similar to yours — tells you more than a single quote.
  • Do they manufacture to your exact coil dimensions, or only in fixed standard sizes? Coil bore, OD, and width vary by plant. A manufacturer who custom-designs each hook or grab to your dimensions, crane type, and operating environment will fit your line better than one offering only fixed catalogue sizes.

Why this process matters more than the price quote

A C hook or coil grab that looks identical to a cheaper alternative on a spec sheet can behave very differently under load if the underlying engineering process differs — FEA-optimised arm profiles, coded welding, and NDT inspection are what actually determine whether a hook performs reliably at its rated capacity over years of cycling, not just on day one. Our C hook types and selection guide shows what those design decisions look like in practice.

What a complete process looks like

The full manufacturing sequence for a properly engineered lifting attachment runs: application data collection, FEA structural design, fabrication by coded welders from certified plate, NDT inspection of all welds, and proof load testing at 125% of rated SWL — with a test certificate, SWL marking, and as-built drawing shipped with the unit. Manufacturers who can walk you through each of these steps, rather than skipping straight to a delivery date, are the ones worth working with for coil handling equipment your operation depends on. That process is how Pragya has built its steel handling and testing equipment since 1992 — more about the company.

When to bring in an engineering team

Ask any prospective manufacturer to walk through their design and testing process for your specific coil dimensions and capacity before you place an order — a manufacturer confident in their engineering process will have no trouble explaining it in detail.
