Hot rolling mills handle coils straight off the finishing line, still carrying residual heat and mill scale — the handling equipment has to tolerate both without holding up the line.

What makes hot mill coil handling different

Coils coming off a hot strip mill can run well above ambient temperature and carry loose scale on the surface. Equipment operating near the coiler and run-out table has to hold up to that environment cycle after cycle, while still handling coils that are frequently at or near the equipment's rated capacity.

C hooks for hot coil transfer

C hooks are the standard crane attachment for lifting coils by the inner bore between the coiler, storage, and downstream processing. For above-400°C service, Pragya builds hooks in heat-resistant alloy steel rather than the standard IS 2062 E350 structural plate used at lower temperatures — a distinction that matters because a hook rated for cold coil handling isn't automatically suited to hot mill duty. Every hook is sized to the heaviest coil in the mix, not the average, with a minimum safety factor of 4:1 per IS 3815 / EN 13157, and ships with a proof load test certificate. Our C hook types and selection guide covers the variants. For slabs rather than coils, a high-temperature slab tong is the equivalent hot-duty attachment.

Coil tilters for orientation changes

Hot mill coils often need to change orientation between the coiler (which typically produces an eye-horizontal coil) and downstream processing or storage that calls for eye-vertical handling, or vice versa. Pragya's coil tilters handle this with hydraulic or mechanical actuation across a 0–90° rotation range, at capacities up to 45 ton. The hydraulic variant gives smooth, precisely controllable movement — useful where the tilt needs to stop and hold partway — while the mechanical version trades some of that fine control for fewer hydraulic parts to maintain. Safety interlocks prevent operation outside the intended sequence, which matters more on a hot mill where an interrupted cycle can leave a heavy coil in an unstable position. Our coil tilter buying guide compares the two actuation types in detail.

Motorised trolleys for mill-to-storage transfer

Once a coil is off the coiler, it typically needs to move — to cooling, storage, or the next process step. Pragya's motorised trolleys handle loads from 1 to 150 ton, with table sizes from 2000–10000 × 1500–3000 mm and travel speeds up to 25 m/min. V-frame or U-frame designs keep the coil positioned securely in transit, and power options (battery, cable reel, or busbar) are chosen based on how the trolley needs to integrate with the mill's existing electrical infrastructure. Hydraulic tipper variants add loading and unloading capability at the trolley itself, which reduces the number of separate handling steps between the coiler and the next station — see our motorised trolley selection guide.

Putting it together

A typical hot mill coil handling chain runs: coiler discharge → C hook or similar crane attachment to the run-out area → coil tilter if orientation needs to change → motorised trolley to storage or the next process. Each piece has to be sized independently for the heaviest coil the mill produces, and the equipment supplier should be able to speak to how their hooks, tilters, and trolleys perform specifically in continuous high-temperature service — not just their rated tonnage on a spec sheet.
