Steel service centres process coils from multiple mills in varying sizes and grades, so their equipment has to handle more variability per shift than a single-product mill line does.

The variability problem

A rolling mill typically runs a narrower band of coil sizes because it's producing to its own line's specification. A service centre receives coils from different sources for slitting, blanking, or cut-to-length processing, and those coils vary in outer diameter, width, and orientation on arrival. Equipment selection has to account for that range up front, not just the "typical" coil.

Coil tilters for orientation flexibility

Coils arrive at a service centre in whatever orientation the shipping mill used, which doesn't always match what the centre's processing line needs. Pragya's coil tilters rotate coils across a 0–90° range at capacities up to 45 ton, in hydraulic or mechanical configurations. The hydraulic version gives finer control over where the rotation stops — useful when a service centre is handling a mixed queue of coil sizes and needs consistent, repeatable positioning rather than a single fixed rotation. Low-profile designs that keep the coil close to the ground during rotation matter more here than in an open mill yard, since service centre floor space is usually at more of a premium — our coil tilter buying guide covers that trade-off.

Turnstiles for full rotation and positioning

Where a tilter handles the vertical/horizontal orientation change, a turnstile provides full 360° continuous rotation for positioning material during handling. Pragya's turnstiles run up to 70 ton capacity in manual or hydraulic configurations, built to CE certification. In a service centre, this kind of rotating platform is used for repositioning coils or processed material for the next handling step, loading, or inspection — jobs where the operator needs to bring a specific face or angle of the material into position rather than simply moving it from A to B. See the turnstile's role in coil and strip processing lines for how it integrates.

Sizing for the mix, not the average

The core buying principle for a service centre is the same one that applies to any crane attachment or handling device: size to the heaviest and largest item you'll ever see, not the average across your product mix. A service centre that processes mostly light-gauge coil but occasionally receives a heavy, large-OD coil needs equipment rated for that outlier, or a second piece of equipment scaled for it. Working from your actual coil size and weight distribution — not just a single "capacity" number — is what determines whether a tilter or turnstile purchase actually solves your handling bottleneck. Bring your coil data to our engineering team rather than sizing from a catalogue figure.
