A coil grab needs inspection or replacement if you notice slippage during lifts, visibly worn gripping surfaces, a mechanism that no longer moves freely, or any crack β€” these signs indicate the grab is no longer performing to its rated safe working load, regardless of how it looks at a glance.

Signs to watch for

  • Any slippage during a lift. A coil grab's mechanical gripping mechanism requires no external power, relying entirely on correct engagement with the coil's outer or inner diameter β€” any slippage during lifting or transport means the grip is no longer secure and the unit needs immediate inspection.
  • Visibly worn gripping surfaces. The wear-resistant steel construction of a coil grab is designed for repeated engagement with coil diameters in the 1067-1880 mm (42"-74") range β€” visible wear, scoring, or smoothing of the gripping surface reduces the friction the grip depends on.
  • Mechanism that sticks or doesn't fully engage. A grab's gripping mechanism should move freely between open and closed positions β€” sticking, partial engagement, or noticeably increased force required to operate it are early indicators of internal wear or contamination.
  • Any visible crack, regardless of size or location. Cracks anywhere on a load-bearing coil handling attachment are cause for immediate removal from service β€” there's no safe threshold of "small enough to ignore" for structural cracking.
  • Uneven or unbalanced lifting. A properly functioning coil grab lifts with balanced load distribution; if a coil hangs unevenly or the crane shows signs of an off-center load, inspect the grab's gripping points for uneven wear.
  • Difficulty positioning or engaging the coil. Increasing difficulty getting the grab to engage a coil correctly β€” even before an actual failure occurs β€” suggests wear in the mechanism that's changing its geometry from spec.
  • Overdue proof load test. Even a grab with no visible defects should be pulled from service if its periodic proof load re-test has lapsed β€” visual inspection alone can't confirm continued performance at rated SWL.

Inspection versus replacement

Not every sign above means immediate replacement β€” worn facings or a sticking mechanism may be repairable with parts replacement and servicing. But any crack, any structural deformation, or any failure that reappears after a repair means the unit should be retired rather than returned to service again. The distinction matters: a coil grab is only as reliable as its worst unaddressed defect the next time it's loaded to capacity.

Building a routine inspection habit

Daily visual checks before use, combined with a periodic full inspection and re-test schedule, catch nearly all of the signs listed above before they become an in-service failure. Coil grabs that fail in the field almost always showed at least one of these signs beforehand β€” the gap is usually in inspection frequency, not in the difficulty of spotting the problem. If a replacement is on the cards, coil grab vs C hook is worth reading before you re-order the same attachment by default.

When to bring in an engineering team

If you see any crack, deformation, or a mechanism that continues to malfunction after servicing, get an engineering assessment before returning the grab to service. A shop-floor judgment call on structural integrity isn't a substitute for a proper inspection against the equipment's original design and rated SWL.
